1910 Edwardian 9ct Rose Gold Bamboo Bangle
An absolutely stunning antique Edwardian 9ct rose gold bamboo bangle, made by Smith & Pepper Limited in 1910.
This beautiful bangle is made in the classic bamboo design with twelve sections, there are plain sections alternating with lovely engraved sections designed to mimic bamboo, these sections appear to have a yellow gold "wash" applied. She is an oval shape, hinged, with a secure box and tongue clasp and a new safety chain. She is hollow, however is very solidly made and is wax filled.
This is the most solid bamboo bangle I have every sold, she weighs an impressive 43 grams, and although she is wax filled, so her actual gold content is unknown, she is extremely solid. I cannot find one ding, even a small one. You will be hard pressed to find another of these at this weight, she is at least 10 grams heavier than the heaviest ones. This classic piece has been worn and loved for 116 years, she has a small amount of separation at the seams nearest her clasp, but it is minor. She has hand engraving on the inside, but it is worn and I can't make out what it says.
She is hallmarked for Smith & Pepper Limited, one of most favourite makers, every time I see their hallmark I understand why the piece is such good quality. Smith & Pepper are a very well respected jewellery business that traded until 1981. Their premises in Vyse Street, Birmingham in the UK were then turned into the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter by the Birmingham council. This beauty was assayed as 9ct gold in Birmingham in 1910.
She comes with an independent replacement valuation for $7,000, this is to have her remade not buy an antique one. She would look stunning stacked with other bracelets and could be worn with both rose and yellow gold.
A very special piece, awaiting her next loving owner.
