1881 Victorian Sterling Silver Monogrammed Sovereign Case
A stunning antique sterling silver single sovereign holder, with a beautiful hand engraved monogram.
A sovereign holder was used by a gentleman to carry gold sovereigns. It would have been connected to a watch chain and kept in a waistcoat pocket. This one is a beautiful compact example in wonderful condition.
There is something very attractive about this piece, she is relatively compact and has a beautiful roundness that combined with the polished finish gives her a wonderful tactility. She has a beautiful hand engraved monogram on the front, I believe it is "CEA".
Made by Michael Klean and Co of Myddleton Street, Clerkenwell, London in 1881. She is a bit of a mystery, as her condition is so good, that I was surprised by her date stamp. The button section at the top is hallmarked for another jeweller which could mean it was replaced at some point and the wear to the hallmarks on the button section shows she was well used even after this. However, she is in excellent antique condition. She has only very minor surface scratches and one tiny ding that is only mentioned for full disclosure, but definitely cannot be seen when worn.
Because of her compact size she is easy to wear. She looks stunning clipped to a watch chain or even worn on a modern silver chain. This is an amazing collectible piece of history. A real statement piece!
