Victorian Rose Gold Day and Night Gate Bracelet with Padlock
Beautiful antique Victorian 9ct rose gold “day and night” padlock gate bracelet.
A gorgeous dainty rose gold gate bracelet. Beautifully detailed with one side having hand chasing and the other side with plain links, hence the name "day and night" as it could be worn either way. I suspect that one set of links closest to the padlock is a later addition to extend the bracelet and given its small size, suggests it was probably a child's bracelet and was then extended to fit her as an adult.
The padlock is a nice large size and is hallmarked for FJH Thomas Jewellers of St Paul's Square Birmingham UK, unfortunately the place of assay and the date stamp are too worn to read but most likely Birmingham and from 1880-1900. This padlock is different from most in that the opening is a spring catch and not the standard padlock clasp, much more secure.
The links are hollow as was custom to the construction of these bracelets in the Victorian era. The bracelet links have a few dings but this in no way detracts from its beauty and given that it is circa 1900's is not surprising. A very beautiful wear every day bracelet.
